Darcy Crocker has served as the professional development coordinator for the PEELLS grant since November of 2008. After she received her Bachelor’s of Science from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Ms. Crocker worked in the fashion industry for 8 years before returning to graduate school to study education. She holds a Masters of Education in reading and an Education Specialist degree in early literacy and interventions from The University if Virginia. She has worked as a Book Buddy, elementary classroom teacher and reading teacher in a Title 1 school in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Upon moving to Richmond several years ago, she founded Research Based Teaching, a company dedicated to improving reading instruction through professional development, private remedial tutoring and individual educational testing. She works with area school systems to implement researched based teaching and reading instruction.
Ms. Crocker is adjunct faculty for The University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University. She teaches graduate classes for central Virginia teachers in Word Study, Foundations of Reading Instruction and Reading in the Content Areas. She has also taught workshops for Reading First at the First, Second and Third grade level.
Currently, Ms. Crocker works with ERF classroom teachers and assistants in applying scientifically based reading research and best teaching practices. She has over 15 years experience working for nonprofit companies and has been in education for over 10 years. Ms. Crocker implements monthly professional development workshops based on current research and the individual needs of the ERF schools. She also works in supporting coaches in their classroom mentoring based on professional development goals.
