Cynthia Hutchinson is the Professional Development Coordinator. Ms. Hutchinson joined Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 and has served as the Richmond Early Reading First Project Coordinator, and the professional development provider for the current two Early Reading First projects and a local community-based early literacy project. As a VCU faculty member, Ms. Hutchinson has developed and teaches a series of six early language and literacy graduate courses resulting in an Early Literacy Certificate for currently practicing public school preschool teachers.

Ms. Hutchinson has also served as a consultant for several local and state literacy and early childhood related projects and initiatives and currently serves on the Richmond Early Childhood Association as the University Representative and on the Richmond Area Reading Council Early Literacy Committee. Serving as adjunct faculty for the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University has provided Ms. Hutchinson opportunities to teach a variety of graduate early literacy courses in the greater Richmond area. As an instructor in Virginia’s summer Reading First Institutes, Ms. Hutchinson taught participating kindergarten and first grade teachers scientifically-based reading research practices for early language and literacy instruction.

Ms. Hutchinson is completing her doctoral degree in Reading Development at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. Her interests include early language and literacy and preschool teacher professional development serving the needs of children from low-income urban communities.
