As ESL Family Literacy Specialist for an Early Reading First Grant known as Partnership for Excellence in Early Language and Literacy Skills (PEELLS) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) I am actively engaged with families through workshops and home visits and have written and translated monthly newsletters and book guides. My accomplishments thus far in this capacity have been my September family workshop at the Children’s Museum was the highest attended of all three VCU Early Reading First Grants. I also created Parent Resource Guides in both English and Spanish along with Home Literacy Kits for parents and children to work on together to help reach literacy goals. My community contacts have secured over five thousand dollars ($5000) worth of donations for families for the PEELLS grant.

My background includes Director of Educational Outreach for the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (VHCC) where I initiated many educational programs for Hispanic youth. Including the development and implementation of a literacy program, ANLA (Ayudando a los Niños Latinos a Aprender/Helping Latino Children to Learn) funded by the generosity of the Verizon Foundation for Chesterfield County Public Schools in the area of literacy for ELL students to achieve the goal of reading at grade level by third grade (2004-07).

Other accomplishments include nominated one of fifty Latino leaders and volunteers in the United States, recognized at White House reception by President George W. Bush. Virginia Department of Education Advisory Board (2004-06), Virginia Department of Education Task Force for Global Education (2007), U.S. Department of Education OELA Parent Advisory Board (2005-06), NCPELL Advisory Board (2005-06), Latino Leadership Program for Richmond Metropolitan area with Regent University (2006), Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (2004-07), Assisted in the development and sat on the Board of the award winning LEAP program, The Steward School ( 2006-09) and sat on the distinguished panel of Virginia educators with US Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings (2008).
