Barbara Booth serves as Family Literacy Coordinator for the SEELLS project through the Literacy Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University. Barbara joined VCU in May of 2006. She served as Family Literacy Specialist and later as Professional Development Coordinator for Richmond Early Reading First. She also currently works through the Virginia Literacy Foundation and the Partnership for Families Northside (PFFN) to coordinate the work of NoRF (Northside Reading Foundations), a local community-based early literacy project.
Barbara has served as Vice-President of the Richmond Early Childhood Association, and currently serves on the Ready Families Action Team of the Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond Area strategic plan for children’s school readiness.
Barbara received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Campbell University in Buie’s Creek, North Carolina and a Master’s in Religious Education from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. She has worked in the fields of social work and early childhood education. Prior to coming to the Literacy Institute, Barbara served as a statewide educational consultant and curriculum writer for a faith-based organization. Her interests include early childhood education and family literacy, supporting intergenerational education and experiences which foster early literacy development.
