Kelly Tobe is a Literacy Coach with SEELLS, Supporting and Ensuring Early Language and Literacy Success, - a new project at The Literacy Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Kelly joined Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007 as part of the Early Reading First grants funded through the U.S. Department of Education. Kelly has served as a Reading Specialist and as a trainer for the commonwealth on What’s Different About Teaching Reading to Speakers of Other Languages, specifically early reading skills.
Prior to VCU, Kelly worked as a Reading Specialist and as an English as a Second Language Teacher in Title 1 schools within the Chesterfield County School System. She has two separate undergraduate degrees: one in Spanish Linguistics and one in Speech Communication, both are from Indiana University in Bloomington. She has a prek – grade six teaching endorsement from the University of Richmond. And, she holds a Masters in Reading (M.Ed.) from Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a second endorsement to teach preschoolers through high school in English as a second language.
